The Government of Myanmar has set up a new committee, replacing an existing body, to study and revise the minimum wage in the country. The current minimum wage of K3,600 per day was set by the previous government in September 2015. The new committee includes financial experts, ministries and representatives from labour and employer groups.
The committee, set up this month, is being chaired by minister of labour, immigration and population Thein Swe. Deputy minister for agriculture, livestock and irrigation Hla Kyaw and Myo Aung, a senior official from the ministry of labour, immigration and population are nominated as vice chairmen, according to the President’s Office.
When wages were revised in September 2015, worker groups had demanded K5,600 as daily wage. They say the K3,600 daily wage is far less than wages given to government staff.
In Myanmar, minimum wage is the amount paid to workers with no experience, especially new workers. So, the amount earned by skilled workers should be higher than minimum wage. (RKS) Fibre2Fashion News Desk – India
